Banladeshi director Tareque Masud 1956 - 2011

Tareque Masud (Bengali: তারেক মাসুদ; 6 December 1956 – 13 August 2011) was an award-winning Bangladeshi independent film director. He was known for directing the films Muktir Gaan (1995) and Matir Moina (2002), for which he won a number of international awards, including the International Critics' Prize and FIPRESCI Prize for Directors' Fortnight at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. He died in a road accident on 13 August, 2011 while returning to Dhaka from Manikganj on the Dhaka-Aricha highway after visiting a filming location. His microbus collided head-on with an oncoming passenger bus. The cinematographer Mishuk Munier, a long-time colleague, was also killed in the accident, while Masud's wife Catherine Masud was seriously injured. At the time of his death, Masud was working on a movie titled Kagojer Ful (The Paper Flower).

Tareque Masud was born in Nurpur village, Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur District, Bangladesh. He studied at an Islamic madrasah as a child, but the outbreak of the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan forces in 1971 put an end to his studies at the Islamic seminary. After the war, Masud pursued general education and went on to obtain a Masters degree in History at Dhaka University.

His wife, Catherine Masud, is a Chicago-born film editor. They have a son, Nishad Bingham Putra Masud.

Career

One of Masud's earliest works was the documentary Adam Surat (Inner Strength) on the Bangladeshi painter SM Sultan of Narail District which he completed in 1989. His most famous film in early age of his career was the documentary Muktir Gaan (The Song of Freedom, 1995) where camera follows a music troupe during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. The members of the troupe sing songs to inspire freedom fighters. The film was made mainly based on the footage of American filmmaker Lear Levin that Masud got from the basement of Levin's house in New York.

Along with his US-born wife, Catherine Masud, who was his co-director and a film editor, Masud ran a film production house based in Dhaka named Audiovision.

His first full-length feature film, Matir Moina (English release title "The Clay Bird") which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, derives inspiration from his own childhood experiences. He won the International Critic's Award at the Cannes film Festival in 2002 for this film, as well as the FIPRESCI Prize for Directors' Fortnight for "its authentic, moving and delicate portrayal of a country struggling for its democratic rights." Matir Moina was received with critical praise and toured the international circuit. It was one of the first Bangladeshi films to be widely circulated and was greeted with enthusiasm for its realistic depiction of life without the melodrama that is prevalent in many other South Asian films.

His latest film, Ontorjatra, is a tale of two generations of Bangladeshi diaspora in London. The film describes the short visit home of a divorced mother and her son. The next project of Tareque and Catherine Masud is Kagojer Phool (The Paper Flower) which deals with the incidents of the partition of the Indian subcontinent. This film may be called the prequel of Matir Moina.

Death

Masud died in a road accident near Ghior Upazila on 13 August 2011 while returning to Dhaka from Manikganj on the Dhaka-Aricha highway after visiting a shooting location. His microbus collided head-on with an oncoming passenger bus. In the accident, his wife Catherine Masud was also seriously injured. He along with the other passengers were traveling to choose shooting locations for his new film. The name of his new movie is "Kagojer Ful" (The Paper Flower) filming of which was supposed to begin after shooting locations were elected.

Masud was travelling with long-time co-worker Ashfaque Munier (aka Mishuk Munier), a well-known cinematographer, TV journalist and CEO of ATN News. Munier also died in the accident. The coffins of Masud and Munier were laid out in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Sunday the 14th of August, when thousands of Bangladeshis came to pay their last respects. Ashfaque Munier was also the son of the late Bengali intellectual Munier Chowdhury who was killed by collaborators during the liberation war of 1971.

Bangali Actor Bulbul Ahmed 1941 - 2010

Bulbul Ahmed (born 15 Sept 1941 - Died 15 July 2010), Famed for his portrayal of the iconic role Debdas, Bulbul Ahmed would've turned 70 in another three months. Apparently he wanted to celebrate the upcoming birthday but fate had other plans. On July 15, around 1 am, the famed actor passed away.

Ahmed has been unwell for quite some time. On July 14, when his condition rapidly deteriorated, Ahmed was taken to Square Hospital in Dhaka. His body has been kept at BIRDEM. The janaza will be held today after jumma prayers at FDC.

A spell of sorrow has descended on Bangladeshi filmdom as the news broke. Veteran actress Shabnam said, “He was a wonderful human being and could embrace anyone with ease. I'd done only one film with him -- 'Love in America' directed by Mohsin.”

Actress and lawmaker Kabori had been paired with Ahmed in several films. The visibly moved actress said, “He was very gracious. I have so many fond memories involving him. We had done 'Debdas,' 'Dui Jibon,' 'Bodhu Bidaye' and 'Kolmilota.' During shooting for 'Debdas' he told me, 'Dreams are beautiful but when they get shattered, they leave behind incredible heartache.' I'll always remember that. We have not only lost a remarkable artiste but also a man with a big heart.”

Noted filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam, who cast Ahmed as Debdas in his film, said, “With Rahman passing away, I lost my Chunilal; now I've lost Debdas. Apart from 'Debdas,' he had acted in two other films directed by me -- 'Shubhoda' and 'Bhalo Manush.' He was an educated, polished actor. His [Ahmed's] death has created an irreparable void in the movie industry.”

Ahmed's contemporary, renowned actor Razzaque said, “We were not just co-artistes; the bond between us was more than that. His sudden death has shaken me. I pray to Almighty that my friend is granted eternal peace. We had done around 18 films together. I acted in “Rajlokkhi Srikanto' directed by Bulbul.

Fellow actor Sohel Rana said, “His [Bulbul's] passing away was certainly sudden. He was a real gentleman and never spoke in loud voice. He moved to films from TV but we became fast friends. I'll forever cherish our times spent together.”

Actress Shuchorita said, “I'd been meaning to visit Bulbul bhai for the last few days. I still can't believe he is gone. He was very down to earth and an amazing human being.”

Seasoned actress Sharmili Ahmed said, “He played the male lead opposite me in 'Rupali Shaikotey' and 'Aradhona.' I'd acted in three films directed by him. Not sure how many TV plays we'd done together. I have so many memories of him. I couldn't stop crying when I heard the news this morning.”

Tabarruk Ahmed Bulbul was born on September 15, 1941 on Agamsi Lane, old Dhaka. Son of Mohammad Khalil Ahmed and Mosammat Moslema Begum, Tabarruk completed his MA from Dhaka University. His father was an amateur actor and young Tabarruk was inspired to delve into the medium by him. He worked as a banker from 1965 to '75. As an actor he decided to go by the name 'Bulbul Ahmed.' Ahmed's acting career began with theatre. His big break came with the film “Iye Korey Biye” (1972). Among his memorable films are “Shimana Periye,” “Mohona,” “Jibon Niye Jua,” “Bhalo Manush,” “Shesh Uttor,” “Mohanayak,” “Harano Manik,” “Shonar Horin” and more.

Bangali Actor Salman Shah 1970 - 1996

Shahriar Chowdhury Emon (November 3, 1970 - September 6, 1996), better known as Salman Shah, was a Bangladeshi actor. His nickname was Emon. Salman Shah was the 1st son of Kamaruddin Chowdhuri & Nila Chowdhury.

The name, Salman Shah, evoked an era in the Bangladeshi filmdom. In the early 1990s when the country’s film industry remained stagnant and when vulgarism and weak-script movies ruled the industry, Salman Shah entered the film industry in a spirit vibrant with promise. The ailing film industry witnessed a real romantic hero and welcomed a new era in the romantic film genre with his appearance.

It was back in 1993, that film buffs for the first time observed the superstar of modern Bengali films, Salman Shah, with the blockbuster Keyamat Thekey Keyamat. Directed by Sohanur Rahman Sohan, the film was the remake of the Indian blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. In his debut movie, Salman earned a niche through his mesmerising performance and quality acting skills and soon he turned into a heartthrob of the young film connoisseurs. The pair Salman Shah and Moushumi were treated as the most popular team after Razzak-Kabori, right after the release of the film.

Salman Shah, which is actually a pseudonym of Shahriar Chowdhury Imon, started his acting career in TV drama. However, he came to the limelight through his first film. Apart from Keyamat Thekey Keyamat, in his short span of film career he also acted in another hit 18 movies. His on-screen chemistry with his first heroine Moushumi and then Shabnur were the most wanted silver screen couples of that time.

Death

On September 6, 1996, Shah was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his home. According to media, Salman's wife, Samira was responsible for his death, for they were said to be on bad terms for some days regarding co-actress Shabnoor. But 13 years on, no one has been officially charged for his murder. Although a medical board found "nothing new other than suicide". Salman's mother Nila Chowdhury in a fax message said she has rejected the examination report of the medical board.
